If Paris Saint-Germain's season-opening loss to Lens was an oddity, able to be written off by the fact that PSG were without seven key players due to a COVID-19 outbreak, then today's 1-0 defeat at the hands of Marseille was more of a nightmare. Not only did it end with a handful of players from both teams being sent off, but with a furious Neymar making claims of racial abuse.
The game went to hell in the sixth minute of stoppage time, when frustrated PSG players started a scuffle that included kicks and punches. Four players were sent off immediately, and after a VAR review, the referee determined that Neymar had also earned himself a red card when he slapped Álvaro González in the back of the head.
On his way off the field, Neymar stopped to tell the referee that Álvaro had said something racist to him:
After the game, Neymar got more specific on Twitter:
Roughly translated, the first part of that tweet reads, "VAR catching my 'aggression' is easy … now I want to see the image of the racist calling me 'MONO HIJO DE PUTA' (monkey motherfucker) … that I want to see!
What's up?"
In a separate tweet, Neymar called Álvaro an "asshole" and said his only regret was not hitting him in the face.
