Longtime Cincinnati Reds television broadcaster Thom Brennaman officially resigned his position Friday evening, notifying WCPO via a statement that he and his family "have decided that I am going to step away from my role as the television voice" of the team. This came a month after a hot mic picked up Brennaman referring to some unknown place as "one of the fag capitals of the world," and his subsequent sorely inadequate apology and non-explanation for his use of a homophobic slur.
The Reds shared a statement of their own on Twitter, applauding Brennaman's "heartfelt efforts of reconciliation" and calling him "a fantastic talent and a good man."
Dozens and possibly hundreds of baseball fans and Twitter users responded, in one of the great on-pilings in recent internet history:
Tons and tons of these. Too many to count, and no sign of slowing. And I for one am of the opinion that this sort of herd action from the Twitter mob is absolutely, positively as here's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and that'll be a home run. And so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame. I don't know if I'll be putting on this headset again.
